I completed a triptych of films about rural life and farming - the third of which, Range, was presented at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. My new project, Soiled, is both a continuation of themes explored in my previous works and an outgrowth of my own experiences of living and growing food in the city of San Francisco.
Soiled is a 25-minute, 16mm experimental documentary film that re-imagines the city of San Francisco as a place where people practice agriculture. It employs the manual technologies of 16mm film to describe a space that sits in contrast to urbanism yet thrives within it; this project seeks to inhabit the alchemical relationships between beauty and function, hope and activism, art and agriculture.
I am searching for the fusion between urban and rural in my own life, and I make work that explores this point of contact.
